The mobile-only plan was first tested in India a year ago, set at US$4 monthly. At the time, there is no certainty if the feature can make its way past the testing phase. It was finally rolled out in many countries prior to its launch in the Philippines as a bid to make the platform more accessible considering that Netflix is facing competition from HBO, Disney and other traditional media giants jumping into the digital space. Netflix also noted that its Filipino subscribers have logged in to binge-watch up to 3.3 hours of online video content a day, making the Philippines a mobile-first country.
Back to the mobile-only plan, subscribers can enjoy unlimited viewing without online advertisements popping up and with video quality set at standard definition. Simultaneous viewing is also set to one device similar to Netflix's Basic Plan. Furthermore, the plan allows users to access additional features that can enhance their viewing experience. Among them is Smart Downloads which lets you download episodes and movies to your mobile device via WiFi connectivity. All they need to do is to download and install the Netflix mobile app on their mobile devices from Google Play and iOS App Store or log on to www.netflix.com, sign up for an account, select the Mobile Plan for Php149/month, add your account details and you're ready to get binged.
Aside from the introduction of the mobile-only plan, Netflix curiously made small adjustments to their subscription plans. The Basic plan is now priced at Php369 a month from Php370 while the Standard and Premium plans can be availed at Php459 and Php549 a month, respectively. Subscribers can pay for their preferred Netflix subscription plan via debit or credit card, direct carrier billing with existing network providers, and even cash using a special Netflix code to be redeemed at the website.
