The continuing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic across the globe affecting more than 50 million people, cut off the lives of more than 1.5 million, and literally encouraged billions to stay safe and active within the comfort of their homes due to the imposed quarantine restrictions and physical distancing practices was never a complete hindrance for The Game Awards as what is highly regarded as "gaming's biggest night" and considered by a major international newspaper as the Oscars of the video game industry continues to honor the best and the finest that has rocked the world of gaming amidst the challenges and struggles the world is currently facing.
For the first time in the highly-anticipated event's history, the sixth edition of the annual awards night organized, produced and hosted by renouned veteran video game journalist Geoff Keighley was held virtually and streamed live online across different platforms available such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, IGN and GameSpot among others - reaching most countries around the world including the Philippines. Like every event that has staged and occurred throughout the year, The Game Awards 2020 has been mandated to be abided by the health and safety protocols provided by the US government and the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Since its inception, The Game Awards has been a platform for numerous video game publishers and developers to showcase their upcoming games through World Premieres, and this year is no exception as they include a new Mass Effect game, Monster Hunter Rise, Ghosts n' Goblins Resurrection, Evil Dead: The Game, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and even the inclusion of one of Final Fantasy's most elusive final bosses Sephiroth as one of the new characters for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. When all is said and done throughout the three-hour virtual affair, it was Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us Part II that took home the most number of wins, seven out of 10 nominations to be exact, including the Game Of The Year. One of the highly-anticipated and best-selling PS4 games of the year has captured and captivated the hearts of gamers, gaming enthusiasts, and critics alike which is practically enough to give it the highest nod possible in the gaming world.
