More than thirty years ago, in April 1986, Jim Crockett Promotions in partnership with Mid-South Wrestling launched and staged the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Tag Team Tournament in New Orleans, Louisiana featuring some of the top tag teams from various territories of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) at the time. In April 2019, under the leadership of its current President William Patrick Corgan, the NWA brought back the historic tag team tournament extravaganza known as the Crockett Cup in partnership with Ring Of Honor Wrestling and featuring teams from New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) and Consejo Mundial De Lucha Libre (CMLL) which saw Brody King and Pierre Carl Ouillet (PCO) of Villain Enterprises won the prestigious tilt as well as the NWA World Tag Team Championship belts.
After two tumultuous years which were brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the NWA will be proudly carrying the flags of tradition and evolution as it is set to stage the 2022 Crockett Cup within the Fairgrounds of the Music City - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - featuring two nights of non-stop, hard-hitting and action-packed wrestling action that will be delivered to audiences worldwide live on March 20 and 21 (Manila time) on FITE via the NWA All-Access Pass. The single elimination first round matches will fill up Night One of the 2022 Crockett Cup while Night Two will be headlined by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals of the prestigious tournament as well as six World Championships on the line comprising a brutually-stacked lineup. Sixteen teams, including the current reigning NWA World Tag Team Champions La Rebellión (Mecha Wolf and Bestia 666), are set to vie for bragging rights, a proof of supremacy and a future shot at the NWA World Tag Team Championships. And with professional wrestling hall of famer Jeff Jarrett officially named the tournament's Ambassador, an incredible array of competitors are set to do battle for pride, glory and ultimate victory.
While La Rebellión seeks to prove that it is the most dominant dynasty in the NWA, the 2022 NWA Crockett Cup has intriguingly lured an incredible bounty of teams aiming to move one step closer towards a shot at World Tag Team Championship glory and greatness. Slated to compete are former NWA World Tag Team Champions Aron Stevens and JR Kratos, ROH World Tag Team Champions The Briscoes (Mark and Jay), Strictly Business (Chris Adonis and Thom Latimer), Doug Williams and Harry Smith, The OGK (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett), The Fixers (Jay Bradley and Wrecking Ball Legursky), Matthew Mims and The Pope,Gold Rushhh (Jordan Clearwater and Marshe Rockett), The End (Odinson and Parrow), Hawx Aerie (Luke Hawx and PJ Hawx), The Cardonas (Mike Knox and VSK), The Ill Begotten (Alex Taylor, Captain YUMA, Jeremiah Plunkett, and/or Rush Freeman), and The NOW (Hale Collins and Vik Dalishus). Kicking off the tournament is a fatal four-way tag team play-in match between Violence Is Forever (Dominic Garrini and Kevin Ku), The Bad News Boyz (Brandon Tate and Brent Tate), The Rip City Shooters (Joshua Bishop and Wes Barkley), and The Heatseekers (Elliott Russell and Sigmon) that will determine which will fill up the last slot in the bracket for the first round.
On the other hand, the 2022 NWA Crockett Cup will also be headlined by newly crowned NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Matt Cardona in his first title defense against former two-time champion Nick Aldis who is the longest-reigning Worlds Heavyweight Champion of NWA's modern era with Ambassador Jeff Jarrett as special guest referee and a Fatal Four-Way match between Austin Aries, Homicide, Darius Lockhart and Colby Corino for the vacant NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship which was officially brought back after five years of inactivity. Other championship matches slated to take place on Night Two of the 2022 NWA Crockett Cup include the following: Anthony Mayweather (c) vs. Jax Dane for the NWA National Heavyweight Championship, Tyrus (c) vs. Rodney Mack for the NWA World Television Championship, Kamille (c) vs. Kylie Rae vs. Chelsea Green for the NWA World Women's Championship, and The Hex (Allysin Kay and Marti Belle) (c) vs. Pretty Empowered (Ella Envy and Kenzie Paige) for the NWA World Women's Tag Team Championship.
