Technological University of the Philippines (TUP)-Manila is slated to host the men’s basketball event in the 3rd Asia Pacific University Games (APUG)-Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL) Championship which will be held on May 6-10, 2024 under the auspices of the Federation of School Sports Associations of the Philippines (FESSAP) and the Asia Pacific University Sports Union (APUSU). The games will be held in partnership with various associations, universities, and corporate sponsorships according to FESSAP and APUSU president Edwin C. Fabro.
The APUG is a multi-sports competition organized by the APUSU, under the supervision of the Malaysia Ministry of Youth & Sports (KBS) Industry Department led by Prof. Mustaza Ahmad, APUSU Secretary General and Deputy President 2023-2025. The incumbent APUSU chief Fabro, together with FESSAP Chairman of the Board Alvin Tai Lian, will open the ceremony on May 6th with Senator Jinggoy Estrada as Guest of Honor who will do the honor of tossing the ball in the opening games between Indonesia vs host university TUP-Manila. Leading the university in the organization of the event alongside Fabro is TUP president Engr. Reynaldo Ramos while FESSAP Secretary and Chief Finance Officer Maria Cecilia Sarmiento and FESSAP-TUP Executive Assistant Allan Soria will serve as overall caretakers of the event.
The regular member schools in the Philippines recognized by the APUSU include the following: TUP (2023), the University of Cebu (2016), Philippine College Foundation (PCF) (2016), the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) (2017), Mapua University (2019), the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) (2023) and De La Salle University (DLSU)-Dasmarinas (2023). As such, the top two university teams from the 4th PUBL, led by UPHSD and Mapua University, are invited to see action in a five-team tournament organized by the 3rd APUG-PUBL Men’s Basketball Championship and supported by the Philippine Airlines (PAL), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), BESTANK Manufacturing Corporation, KELME Sportswear (EspaƱa), OMNI Electrical & Lighting, Seascape Village (the best fresh seafood in the coastal), Healthy Options (the best organic supplementary well-being), LT Group Inc., HENN Athletic Club (Taiwan), MEGAWORLD Property Developer, Fronte Motor Parts, Burlington Socks, and Paddock’s Casual Jeans.
Universitas Islam Indonesia representing APUSU will be the lone foreign university team to compete in the said tournament while a guest team from FESSAP member-school National University (NU) will also see action in the tournament. The men's basketball games will be overseen by Indonesia-based APUSU Director Ferri Jufry serving as the Commissioner for the Union. Heading the PAGCOR / PHILIPPINE AIRLINES – 3rd APUG -PUBL Working Committee Members are Antonio Quiza (Tournament Director), Melchor P. Divina (Marketing Director), Cecille Sarmiento (Finance Director), Albert Andaya (Communications Director), Romulo Raytos (Technical Director), with PUBL Chairman Christian Tan from Chiang Kai Shek College and Vice Chairman Francisco Gusi from the UPHSD as ex-officio members of the committee.
