Globe Telecom continues to lead the charge in 5G technology deployment across the Philippines, successfully rolling out 256 new 5G sites for the first half of the year, as it solidifies its role as a driving force in the country’s digital transformation. With this latest build, Globe’s 5G outdoor coverage in the National Capital Region (NCR) now reaches an impressive 98.45%. While in key cities across Visayas and Mindanao, Globe achieved a 5G outdoor coverage rate of 94.19%, underscoring its commitment to bringing cutting-edge technology to more people, no matter where they are. The 5G coverage expansion underscores Globe’s ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of digital connectivity and empower Filipinos with faster, more reliable internet services.

In June 2024, Globe registered over 7 million devices connected to Globe’s 5G network, a clear indicator of the growing demand for high-speed mobile data and the company’s ability to meet that demand. “Our aggressive 5G rollout across the country is a crucial part of our strategy to ensure that the Philippines is at the forefront of digital transformation. We are proud to see how our investments are resulting in positive change, enabling our customers to enjoy seamless digital experiences wherever they are," said Globe Senior Vice President and Head of Service Planning and Engineering Joel Agustin. In addition to its domestic expansion, Globe has made significant strides on the international front, having forged 5G roaming partnerships with 167 operators across 87 destinations. These partnerships ensure that Globe customers enjoy high-speed data both in the Philippines and abroad. The move not only enhances user experience but strengthens Globe’s position as a global telecom leader. Globe’s 5G network helps power the country’s digital future, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and a more reliable connection, all of which are essential for economic growth and development.

Meanwhile, Globe has reported an 18.6% increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Manila Area (GMA) in the first half of 2024, a concerning uptrend that undermines efforts to expand connectivity amid steadily increasing demand. From January to June 2024, Globe logged 906 cases of cable theft, a significant rise from 764 cases during the same period in 2023. June had the highest number of cases this year at 169 incidents. Hotspot areas include Quezon City where theft incidents affected Globe’s cable segments in Aurora, Project 8 and Roosevelt. Cables within the Las PiƱas, Makati and Manila are also among those frequently targeted. GMA accounted for about 61.55% percent of the total 1,472 cases logged nationwide in the first half of this year, reflecting a worrying trend of rising cable theft in the metropolis. This escalation poses a serious challenge to Globe’s efforts to enhance and expand its network across the region.

“We have seen a concerning increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Metro Manila area, which also hosts a sizable population of our customer base. This means that for every cable cut, our individual customers lose precious hours of productivity while businesses are deprived of their income potential,” said Agustin. He cited how the impact of fiber cuts could get more amplified in the region as it serves as the country’s economic center and seat of power, stating, “Fiber cuts are an urgent problem to solve, and we cannot do it alone. Our goal is to deepen our cooperation with government agencies, local government units, barangays and law enforcement authorities so that together, we can tackle this menace and bring perpetrators to justice." Globe reiterates its call on the public to be vigilant and report sightings of cable theft incidents to the barangay or police station nearest them.
