OPPO's sleuth of innovative and highly-engaging selfie-centric smartphones
have always been regarded as some of the top mobile devices in the Philippine
market over recent periods based on data from various sources especially the
International Data Corporation. However, that is not the case for one of the country's
biggest mobile store chains and I was intrigued to find out about what seems to
be an underwhelming showdown of sorts.
MemoXpress which has a branch at Robinsons Place Lipa that opened
months ago advertised its top-selling mobile devices for the week of September
4-10, 2017 and I was a bit surprised to find out that some of the top ten are basic
feature phones. But, that's not all. It so happens that one of the best-selling
phones for the said week is the 2017 iteration of the Nokia 3310. In fact, it is
the second best-selling mobile phone among MemoXpress branches nationwide with
another Nokia feature phone on top.
Although Samsung and OPPO make the list, it is hard to believe for
anyone who is looking at the list to think that it is deemed unfair for basic
phones to make a dent in the competitive smartphone market. In my case, all I
can say about this is that it is a statement that many Filipinos are not
willing to afford a device that can cater to their own needs. And for those budget-conscious
consumers, a basic feature phone is already tapped as a start to their own
digital life.
