In
1998, Lipa Ballet School Inc. staged a one-of-a-kind world-class ballet production
to Filipino audiences for the first time and those who have watched it before
were awed and mesmerized by how its students at that time were able to portray
such a wonderful story considering that it was watched and well-loved around
the world through the years. Ten years later, in celebration on its decade of
passion for ballet dancing, the school that brought this amazing presentation
is set to bring it back for new audiences.
If
you want to know what I'm talking about, then I will humbly say that it has to
be The Nutcracker. Now I know those who are reading this article are wondering
what is a world-renouned Christmas presentation doing in the City For All
Seasons. Well, for Lipa Ballet School, it is an early Christmas treat that is
sure to delight audiences yet again. Besides, this is the second time that a
prominent ballet school emanating from my hometown would stage such an
interesting magical presentation that is slated for the holidays.
In
case you don't know about The Nutcracker, the story begins with a warm and
festive party at the home of Baron and Baroness von Stahlbaum. The Von
Stahlbaum children Fritz and Clara are so excited because their cousin, the
Grand Duchess, and many of their relatives and friends are arriving. At the
stroke of midnight, Herr Drosselmeyer presents Clara with a magical gift – a
Nutcracker Prince.
The
Nutcracker Prince tells the story of the battle with the mice and how Clara
saved him from the hands of the Mouse Queen. Soon, the Sugar Plum Fairy and
Herr Drosselmeyer realize Clara is getting tired and so ends the adventure - the Sugar Plum Fairy fades away until next Christmas. Clara is left with the
memory of a beautiful Christmas gift, looking forward to her next trip to the
magical land of dreams.
Aside
from the students of Lipa Ballet School, joining the ensemble that will revisit
the nostalgic story of Clara's journey in the magically wonderful land of
sweets are from Ballet Philippines and the Philippine High School For The Arts.
They will be under the guidance of LBSI's internationally renowned artistic
directors Gregory Aaron of BalletCenter Cebu and Girlie Royeca of Royeca Ballet
in Davao and General Santos. At least these will give you reasons why you
should not miss this treat before the start of the new school year.
