An Improvement Five Years In The Making

Using The Internet

Internet services in the Philippines have been consistently ranked as one of the slowest in Asia and possibly in the world today which is a disappointing discovery for many Filipino internet users who have learned of it. However, when you look at the recent reports released by several local tech news sites such as Yugatech and Unbox, you may realize that internet speeds in our local shores are constantly improving. In fact, the Philippines would happen to have one of the most improved internet speeds in Southeast Asia and what you will read in this article may be the start of something better.

According to the most recent Ookla Speedtest Report which was received and first released by Yugatech a few weeks ago, the Philippines has a fixed download speed of 17.62 Mbps and upload speed of 15.27 Mbps which puts the country at rank number 83. Though it is far from the global average speeds, it seems that the ongoing efforts of the local telecommunications industry were able to contribute well to the constant improvement of local internet services since 2014 when its download speed was 3.52 Mbps at the time.

On the other hand, it was a literal opposite for the country's mobile internet services as its speeds are not enough for the country to improve its standing in the global ranking. The Ookla Speedtest Report have stated that the country's download speed for mobile internet is at 14.01 Mbps while its upload is at 5.99 Mbps which many who are using their own mobile devices don't matter. Still, it was an improvement "five years in the making" if you understand what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I guess that improvement in the country's internet services will be much more faster and effective once the national government makes a decision on what company will be considered as the third telco that will help make Philippine internet faster and more competitive. That will have to wait, unfortunately, due to delays and issues regarding that matter. Nevertheless, I am very satisfied on these developments and I'm hopeful that the telecommunications industry will continue to forge more efforts for the benefit of the modern Filipino internet user.
