It
is rarely unusual for Filipino movie buffs to watch a film that mostly focuses
on cooking. In fact, I have never seen one of its kind in my life except for Viva
Films' The Fighting Chefs. On the other hand, there is a surprisingly strong
backlash and negativity towards what seems to be a God-awful, unforgiving and
biased film chronicling one of the most controversial unsolved cases in the
Philippines today which leads to somewhat bad consequences and outcomes.
Fortunately, Star Cinema has one cooking-centric film that is sure to make
movie lovers laugh and feel delighted on their experience.
Enter
Kusina Kings, a story about a kitchen novice Ronnie (played by Zanjoe Marudo)
and chef restaurateur Benjie (played by Empoy Marquez) who have joined a shady
reality cooking show dubbed the Kusina Kings Challenge in an effortless attempt
to save their restaurant from going under. However, due to some unexpected
twist of events, Ronnie did not only lose their startup money to a scammer but also
ended up putting Benjie in a coma. He then bumped into the ladder's wandering
spirit who convinced him to join the reality show with a promise of guiding him
behind the scenes.
Why
should Filipino trubists watch and enjoy Kusina Kings on the big screens? Well,
for starters, it is a cooking-centric Filipino flick with a mix of comedy
considering that it is striving to pay homage and respect to the golden age of
Philippine comedy - the 90's. Second, the movie interestingly bears inspiration
from probably two of the finest Japanese animation shows in Philippine television
today, namely Cooking Master Boy and Food Wars: Shokugeki No Soma. If you think
what makes Kusina Kings one Filipino cooking film to enjoy doesn't make sense,
then that would be your problem.
Another
interestingly good thing about Kusina Kings is its director Victor Villanueva who
is known for his rejoined local indie flick Patay
Na Si Hesus. It makes sense in my case that these two films sport somewhat
fine similarities when it comes to premise and delivery, but it looks like
Kusina Kings has more than enough for movie buffs to indulge if you compare the
two just by their teasers alone. Well, anyway, regardless of why you are gaining
interest or want to bank part of your pockets on the movie, Kusina Kings is one
cooking comedy film that can give you thousands of reasons why it is one to try
out in cinemas.
