The 72nd foundation day celebration of the city of Lipa marked a memorable
occasion for the Philippine telecommunications industry as Globe Telecom, the premiere
purveyor of the Filipino digital lifestyle, officially launched and introduced the
first 5G powered service in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia, the Globe at
Home Air Fiber 5G, which is regarded as the fulfillment of the telco's promise
of launching 5G services within the second quarter of the year and literally a
breath of fresh air for Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu.
Globe at Home Air Fiber 3G is a fixed broadband service but what makes
it different from traditional wired fiber services is that the base station
beams connectivity to the home as opposed to delivering it through a so-called
last-mile wired connection. Cu explained that such wireless connectivity would
allow them to deliver fiber-like speeds without having to go through the
permitting processes when laying out wired networks and rolling out fiber
cables. Thanks to its higher bandwidth and speeds compared to 4G, 5G is able to
provide fiber-like experience without the wires in the case of theory and substance.
Globe at Home Air Fiber 5G will make use of the Huawei 5G CPE home router
powered by Huawei's Balong 5000 chip which is the first 5G multimode modem
chipset in the world. The device is the first router that can support both 4G
and 5G commercial applications where it can switch to 4G if the 5G signals are
not strong enough. This intriguingly new offering is part of Globe's plans to
connect to two million homes by the year 2020 and it could further boost the
telco's high broadband subscriber base through such an engaging strategy. Prior
to the launch of the new service, Globe currently has more than 1.7 million
home broadband users by the end of the first quarter of 2019.
Anyway, the Globe at Home Air Fiber 5G postpaid plans offer speeds up
to 100 Mbps and super-sized data packages of up to two terabytes. As of now,
these are initially available to eligible customers in Pasig, Cavite and
Bulacan starting July 2019 with more areas to be included in the coming months.
They are priced at Php1,899 per month for speeds up to 20 Mbps, Php2,499 for up
to 50 Mbps and Php2,899 for up to 100 Mbps and come with a data capacity of 2
TB. For more details, visit www.globe.com.ph.
