Uno Productions' Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral have brought a new plethora
of period films in Philippine cinemas to life in today's modern world with their
own epic way of depicting some of the most valuable stories about our nation's
long history and it is ABS-CBN's turn to do the same with Quezon's Game which
is now showing in cinemas nationwide.
Directed
by Matthew E. Rosen, Quezon's Game revolves around the heroism of former Philippine
president Manuel L. Quezon when he led the rescue of around 1,200 Jews during
the Holocaust and eventually opened the doors of the country to them. The film
is a joint venture of ABS-CBN Films' main subsidiary Star Cinema, online
streaming service iWant and Kinetek Productions and stars Raymond Bagatsing as then
President Quezon, Rachel Alejandro and Kate Alejandrino among others. Prior to
its nationwide showing, the movie has bagged a total of 24 awards from various
film festivals around the world including major awards in the Cinema WorldFest Awards
in Canada, IndieFEST Film Awards in California and WorldFest-Houston
International Film Festival in Texas, USA.
The
one-of-a-kind period film has also impressed local critics, journalists and even
prominent functionaries such as Manolo Quezon III representing the Quezon
family, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Martin Diño
and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and Presidential Spokesperson Salvador
Panelo during its VIP screening held last May 7, 2019 at the Powerplant Mall in
Makati City. With these in mind, why should Filipino trubists try to watch
Quezon's Game in cinemas?
Well,
for starters, Quezon's Game revolves around the shining legacy of President
Quezon that Filipinos should remember, honor and respect and how he gave the
thousands he saved a second chance in life. In fact, this movie is not all
about politics or even the life of one great Philippine president. It is all
about what is reflected in the story that matters where a light of humanity
shone when the rest of the world was drowning in the pity of their war and that
would be none other than compassion.
In
time for the celebration of Philippine cinema's 100th anniversary, Quezon's
Game has earned the ire of support from the Film Development Council of the
Philippines (FDCP). Liza Diño, FDCP chairperson and CEO, stated that what makes
the celebration of 100 Years of Philippine Cinema more significant are the
likes of Quezon's Game that not only educates but also enlightens a meaningful
moment in Philippine history. And that is something that we should not
disregard if we want to learn something more about what we want to know which
concludes my say on why you should watch Quezon's Game right now.
