Clear River Games, a video game publisher specializing in classic and retro games, recently announced the rebirth of a true gaming icon as fabled Japanese ARPG (Action Role-Playing Game) Terranigma makes a triumphant return on Nintendo® Switch™, Nintendo® Switch™2, PlayStation®5, XBOX and PC, expected to be released in early 2027.
Exclusively unveiled via the inaugural Pixel Arcadia retro showcase, Terranigma was originally developed by Quintet and released in 1995 during the swansong of the 16-bit era. An action-RPG classic, fast finding fame for its poignant storytelling and highly engrossing gameplay, Terranigma was released during the rise of the 32-bit consoles, overlooked by many gamers, especially across North America where the title failed to secure an official release. Gaining near mythical status as an undiscovered classic, Terranigma finally receives a re-release worthy of the title, long-awaited by discerning gamers. Terranigma weaves a hauntingly powerful tale, recounting the story of Earth’s resurrection by the hands of a young boy named Ark, charting the planets’ progress from the earliest evolution of life, through to the present day. Lauded for its stunning character design by renowned manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, Terranigma features a narrative which will be certain to leave a lasting impression, long after gamers complete their quest. Adored by media and fans alike, Terranigma features fast-paced gameplay that’s simple to pick up and play for gamers of all levels. With gorgeous pixel art graphics and soulfully melancholic music, this new edition of the classic game thoughtfully adds to the original masterpiece, bringing a host of upgrades, tweaks and bonus features, designed to make the best, better still and provide an ideal point of entry for modern gamers. In order to give Terranigma the prestige and authenticity it deserves, Clear River Games is honored to receive the support of Fujiwara who will be providing new key art and in-game designs as well as feedback on the production.
Fujiwara commented, “30 years ago, Terranigma was released on the SNES. Now, at long last it will be available once again.on console and PC, digital and physical. It may not be exactly the same as it was back then, but I'm sincerely delighted about it making its return to the current gaming environment. During the original's development, I was involved with designing not only the characters, but the world too, and even some of the game settings as well. I hope the themes of god and humanity, creation and destruction, and the atmosphere of the world itself resonate with today's players too. Not as a relic of the past, but as a living, breathing work. This moment has been long awaited and now it is finally here. I hope you will enjoy it with all your heart.” Clear River Games General Manager Ali Manzuri shared, “For over thirty years, Terranigma has cemented its status as a true undiscovered gem, inaccessible to many gamers in the West and long overdue for its time in the spotlight. Clear River Games exists to bring titles like these back to a modern gaming audience and as keen lovers of retro inspired gaming, we’re sure our audience will be as excited as we are to jump into this extraordinary world or Terranigma.”
More information on Terranigma will be disclosed in the coming months and gamers are encouraged to visit Clear River Games’ official X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky accounts.
